Professor (& GIS Program Administrator) Warren Roberts

Professor Warren Roberts is a full time GIS faculty with degree in Landscape Architecture & Landscape Planning from the University of Oregon (MLA 98).  Also a BSLA from Cal Poly Pomona ('90). Before coming to Rio Hondo College he taught at California State Polytechnic University in the Department of Landscape Architecture.  Both Warren Roberts & (retired) John Manifor created the GIS Certificate in 1990 and more recently, the GIS AS Degree.
 
Warren has 15 years of professional and academic experience in CAD, GIS and surveying (GPS). He teaches Intro and Intermediate GIS and GPS courses including custom workshops to law enforcement and other various industries.  He has certificates in GIS teaching in Crime Analysis Mapping ( NIJ) & in Incident (Fire) Command Mapping ( GIST) and also FAA part 107 certified.  He has extensive related field work throughout the world including teaching in Costa Rica during Summer. Current research includes environmental modeling including remote sensing within caves, species distribution.  He is currently (National Geographic funded) participating with research in Borneo to determine effects of nest harvesting in Gomantong Cave

Instructor Sean Christian, P.E. & FAA 107 Licensed

Sean Christian is a part-time GIS faculty with a Bachelors and Masters in Civil Engineering from Cal State University at Long Beach and is a registered Professional Engineer within California. He has been a leader in GIS collaborations and initiatives within Los Angeles County including spearheading the development of regional and local storm and sewer conveyance systems within the county. He has extensive knowledge of the underlying geospatial data that is at the core of local and regional government.

 

Sean has over 20 years of professional experience in CAD, GIS, GPS and Asset Management principles within the public utility sector and is recently FAA Part 107 certified. His area of expertise in geospatial analysis includes demographics, population statistics, environmental impact analysis, biodiversity and archaeology studies, sewer and storm drain hydraulics, surface water drainage, grading and many other civil engineering related applications. Sean has over 25 years of experience in Civil Engineering including storm, wastewater, and solid waste management for the County of Los Angeles and is currently a Senior Civil Engineer. He currently manages two closed sanitary landfills and is responsible for work and asset management programs within several solid waste management facilities through the county.

Instructor Enrique G Legaspi

August 26, 2018

is an educator with over 15 years in the classroom. Enrique uses project-based learning to teach and inspire.  Also, as a Co-Site Director and Chief of Staff for an after school center and foundation in Boyle Heights, he established various projects like a GIS program, a robotics team, a 3D experience, and a study abroad program for students to study Mandarin.

​

Creating success for others is core to his educational leadership. As an advocate for learning with technology, focusing on maps, art, and music, Enrique is delivering new ways to teach youth in Los Angeles.  His vision for learning in the 21st century requires a create, curate, and collaborate workflow.  Thus he innovates with intention, while having fun and sharing his passion to continually improve student achievement.

Graduating from Cal State Fullerton with a BA in Business Finance, and earning a Masters in Education, Enrique G Legaspi is passionate about transforming schools into spaces where students have access to professional tools.  
 

Instructor Roger Flores

Instructor Roger Flores is a full time GIS Analyst at LA County Department of Children Services.  Roger is also adjunct faculty in the Geography Department at Cal Poly Pomona. Roger's work has involved the civil engineering industry and social services. He is skilled in GIS Application, AutoCAD, Cartography, Aerial Photography, and Python. He has a Master of Science (MSc) focused in Geographic Information Science and Cartography from California State University-Long Beach.

 

Roger will be teaching Python Script for GIS in the Spring 2019 on Tuesday 7pm to 10pm.  The class will introduce the student to the syntax and fundamentals of Python and how it can be used to automate and streamline workflows in ArcGIS Desktop.

Instructor Angie Saldivar

Instructor Angie Saldivar is a Principal Geographic Information Systems Analyst with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.  She is also a Geographic Information Systems Specialist (GISS) on Federal, State and County Incident Management Teams.  Angie has an MA in Geography from California State University-Los Angeles. Angie brings a lot of real work practical experience to share with her students and is scheduled to teach Introduction to GIS on Saturdays in the Fall 2018

Farrah Nakatani

Ms. Farrah Nakatani is a full-time instructor of the Architect, Civil, Engineering Design & Drafting Department (ACEDD).  Ms. Nakatani received her undergraduate studies in the field of Industrial Technologies, with a minor in Management at California State University of Los Angeles.  Ms. Nakatani is continuing her professional development and is currently earing her graduate degree in Engineering Management from California State University, Northridge.

 

Ms. Nakatani received her first teaching assignment at her Alma Mater; Mount San Antonio College.  She was an Adjunct Instructor for the Industrial Design Engineering program before moving on to a full-time role at Rio Hondo College.  She teaches the introductory courses in technical drawing and CAD; as well as courses in descriptive geometry and residential architecture.

 

Prior to her career as an educator, Ms. Nakatani has spent over 20 years working professionally within the CAD drafting and design industry.  The various projects she has been involved with ranged from manufacturing, electrical engineering and lighting design to swimming pools design and various water features. 

​

In Ms. Nakatani’s spare time… one could catch her on the volleyball court 1-2 times a week.  Or powerwalking in various 5k’s, 10k’s and half marathon events on the weekends (she does not like to run).  Walks through Disneyland are most enjoyable.  The Los Angeles Dodgers is her favorite team.  And she will travel for food… For food is a beautiful thingy to Ms. Nakatani.

Professor Jay Sunyogh

Professor Jay Sunyogh (pronounced "sun-ya") is Professor of Architectural and Engineering Design Drawing and CADD in the Technology Department. Professor Sunyogh joined the faculty at Rio Hondo College in 1980 after three years teaching at a nationally known technical institute in Southern California. Prior to teaching, Mr. Sunyogh was an Architectural Drafting Technician for a local Los Angeles County architectural firm. His teaching specialties are Computer Assisted Design Drawing (CADD), Architecture, and Architectural /Engineering Design Drawing. Mr. Sunyogh has been involved with microcomputer CADD system for over 12 years working with or teaching such CADD programs as AutoCADD, MicroStation, VersaCAD, and Anvil. During the 12 year period working with CADD, Mr. Sunyogh has helped coordinate several grants implementing new CADD hardware and software into the program. In addition to being an instructor, Mr. Sunyogh is a co -advisor for department clubs, an Academic Senator, and shares responsibilities as coordinator of the program. He co-authored the CAD-TUTOR series of colleges and high school textbooks and has a B.A. Degree in Industrial Technology and a M.A. Degree in Vocational Education from California State University, Los Angeles.
