Installing ArcGIS

Rio Hondo is an Esri Site License

Rio Hondo College is an ESRI site licensed campus.  Each lab at Rio Hondo College is installed with the lastest ArcGIS pro.  While all GIS courses are taught using ArcGIS Pro, you also have access to ArcGIS ArcMAP 10x (with Esri extensions).  GIS Classes moved to ArcGIS pro in Summer 2019 by recommendations of LA County industry contacts.  Students can also request ArcGIS Pro installs for their personal computer.

If interested in installing ArcGIS ArcMAP (not Pro), you can find the steps below to install.  Skip to step 5 if you already have an Esri account and the EVA code was provided to you if not email wroberts@riohondo.edu (you must be enrolled in a class).

  1. Can you install software on your computer?
ArcGIS requires Windows.  See here (type "installing on a mac" in the search window) for more information including installation on Mac.  Furthermore, you must have administrative privileges to install on the machine (for example, you can't install software on the library computers)

  2. Obtain ESRI Global Account
Skip this step if provided an account by your Rio Hondo College instructor: http://goo.gl/S3RhC

  3. Obtain Software  Authorization Code

  4. Do you have the EVA Authorization code your professor emailed you? This is good for one computer.  You will need to obtain Authorization Code from your instructor to complete installation

  5. Go to Download ArcGIS Page
Go to http://goo.gl/tP0UK (select Log in with your Existing ESRI Global Account lower right .. "I have an Esri Account".)

  6. Input the EVA code provided to you
You should have the EVA code (EVA+9 numbers) you will then proceed to download links for software.

  7. Download ArcGIS ArcGIS Pro (you can also download ArcMAP too)
download the latest version .. ArcGIS Pro 2.4 (1.50 GB) and if you want, ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) 10.7.1 ( 1,010.27 MB).

  8. Once downloaded, double click or open the file to extract install files .  Select a destination folder to extract the install files. If you choose, you can automatically launch the setup after the files have been extracted. Note: downloading and extracting this file does not mean you installed the software, you need to next open the file and then start the install (next step).

  9. Install ArcGIS

    • ArcGIS Pro

      • extract files to install .. follow steps and install should be easy.  No authorization code is required for ArcGIS pro install.

    • Install ArcGIS?

      • Extract the ArcGIS ArcMAP file you downloaded ... .. accept defaults for everything .. then you will need to wait a few minutes once software starts installing

      • Once installed you will be prompted to provide EVA authorization code ... accept to do so.

      • IMPORTANT: When prompted, select ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced Single Use (notice how I highlighted 'Single Use' .. must be important yes?).  Don't accept defaults for this step.

      • Did you select ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced Single Use?  OK, then we'll proceed.  Click Authorize Now

      • On the Authorization Options dialog, check the 'I have installed my software and need to authorize it.' option and click Next

      • Enter your Authorization Code: (EVA+9 numbers) provided by your instructor.  Click Next

      • Here is a screen capture of me doing the same.

      • On the Authorize Software Extensions dialog, select 'I do not want to authorize any extensions at this time' (you'll do this on next step) and click Next

      • Check the extensions at this time.  I suggested Spatial Analysis and 3D Analysis.  The nine core ArcGIS for Desktop extensions are included with this install.

  10. Additional recommendations

    • Create a folder in your root directory such as c:\gis or d:\gis ... not on your desktop or My Documents.  If you are using the GIS lab on campus, your workspace is d:\students\yourname

    • Do not add spaces to the file name and folder names

    • If you plan on working with raster data (or if you are not sure you are) do no use more than 13 characters in either your folder or file names

    • Your data will be downloaded to a temp folder when obtaining data from arcgis online .  Not knowing where you data is located can make operations difficult at times.  I recommend you first start ArcMAP

    • Once opened, select the menu Customize > ArcMAP Options > Sharing Tab > and change the 'Use User Specified Location' to c:\GIS or d:\students\yourname or whatever you want to have data downloaded and extracted.  Unless you use the same computer each time, you will need to repeat this.

    • Change setting on ArcGIS to work relative path.  Open ArcMAP > File Menu > Map Document Properties and 'check' Store Relative path names to data sources

    • Close ArcMAP (no need to save)
