What would I do If I was a Student?
Funny you should ask ...

You should ask professionals in your field of interest.  Ask them, if they were to do it again what would they do? Hmm .. you're asking me? Glad you did.

  • Learn GIS.  Why?  it is applicable in every field and today, skillsets are what stand you (and your portfolio) apart

  • Sign up a free MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) "Going Places with Spatial Analysis" with Esri

  • Of course, obtain a LinkedIn account and build connections. But you knew that already right?

  • Attend all the industry meetings and round-table discussions .. you don't have time?  Simply obtain your Twitter account.  Some job postings ask for your twitter account .. and use it for professional interests only

  • Oh, of course a degree .. you need a degree.  Start with your AA then BA at a minimum.

  • Join the Esri Young Professional Network

  • I'd learn some Python. Start here. Here are a list of others courses you can request (free access code) from the administrators at Esri site licensed educational institutions

  • If you have a cute (or odd email address) you may want to obtain a professional email address .. I suggest gmail because it provides below...

  • find opportunities to obtain experience (don't wait to be discovered) .. one option is to volunteer on urgent needs of mapping with OpenStreetMap .. the last page of the Esri StoryMap here has step by step directions.

  • Learn GPS for field mapping ..

  • Use cloud based storage and editing such as Google Drive or Dropbox.. flash drives are old school
